CLASS SUMMARY & HOMEWORK

Textbook lessons are complete.  Send book on Monday for the final fun day of drills with little prizes as rewards.  We're going to have a little fun finishing up on the last day!  Your child was given the final graded papers today and their grade report for the year.  Ask them for it if you would like to see it!  You can check on Teacher Ease if you need any more explanations.

Wednesday May 15th

It was Lesson 128 and 129 today.  Our new concepts were finding coordinates on a figure and learning to count by 4's.  We did the 100 subtraction fact drill and nobody can get to the 80% yet.  We are not even close at this time. This needs to be a summer project to work on the subtraction facts.   We will complete the textbook on Wednesday if all goes well.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Side B of Lesson 128 and 129.

Monday May 13

Today we were able to do Lessons 125, 126 and 127 concepts in class and take assessment #24.  The new concepts were perpendicular lines, writing a date with digits and creating an array.  None of these were very difficult so everyone was able to learn this easily.  Thanks J.C and Mom for working on those 3's multiplication facts.  We had a drill today and he did awesome!  HOMEWORK:  Please complete sides B on those 3 lessons.  Most completed Side A with me in class as we went through it.  Have a great weekend!

Wednesday May 8

Today we worked on Lessons 123 and 124 in class.  The concepts were writing a number sentence for an equal groups problem and counting by three transferring the pattern over to multiplying by 3.  The counting they all have, but not the transferring it to multiplication facts!  We will keep drilling it.  HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B for Lessons 123 and 124.  Some may have a few problems on 124 that did not get completed.  Drill the counting by threes as practice.    STAY STRONG THE YEAR IS ALMOST OVER!

Monday May 6

Today we created a survey of the seasons and voted for them, then we took Assessment #23.  We practiced making an array for various multiplication facts, some understood that the first number given was the number of rows and the second number meant how many to place in each row.  We will have to practice this again I am sure.  The last concept was right angles and we found them all over the room!  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Lesson 120 Side B, Lesson 121 finish Side A and do Side B, and Lesson 122 Side A and B.  Hang in there we just have a few days left!

Wednesday May 1

This was an excellent class today.  We did Lesson 118 and Lesson 119.  The new concepts were equal groups of numbers as a way to teach multiplication and then round numbers to the nearest ten.  The last concept was not understood by a couple of the children, but we will review this again on Wednesday.  We did another subtraction speed drill.  That was not their best today.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Side B for Lessons 118 and 119.  ALSO, HAVE YOUR CHILD FINISH THE SUBTRACTION SPEED DRILL FOR THE PRACTICE.  It will help them next year to master those facts so they will be able to do long division easier.

Monday April 29

Everyone was in a mood to work today.  We learned about parallel lines, multiplying by twos and did some counting out of money of different amounts using all coins.  We were able to complete 2 Speed drills and do an Assessment.  We did the front side of Lesson 115 and 116.  HOMEWORK:  Side B needs to be completed for Lessons 115 and 116.  Both side A and B need to be done on Lesson 117.  Thank you parents who are letting their child take more responsibility for their work.  They have been taught these concepts and now we need to see if they can do it without us telling them every move to make.

Wednesday April 24

This was a full class today.  We did 2 Speed Drills, counting by 25's. 3's and 4's, money practice, learned about perimeter and graphs and did a measuring page.  The speed drills have a slight improvement in correct answers.  I am encouraged.  We were able to do Side A of Lesson 113 in class.  HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B of Lesson 113 and Side A and B of Lesson 114.  Let your child do as much as they possibly can by themselves.  We are working toward more independence in the third grade.  We teach the concepts and then the child uses what he/she has learned accurately.

Monday April 22

Today we continued our work on the double subtraction problems, worked on money and did lots of counting by different ways.  Everyone knows how to count by 2's, 5's, and 10's, but we are working on 3's and 4's.  We have some pretty cool ways to do this and had fun trying to master it today.  We even worked on a doubles drill so they can use it in the subtracting pages.  We did 2 speed drills and the concepts for Lessons 111 and 112.  I did not carry in a scales to weigh students on, but they understood about pounds.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Side B of Lesson 111 and do both sides of Lesson 112.  Then, relax and enjoy the weekend!

Wednesday April 17

Today we went back and worked on the borrowing concept on the board.  A couple of students are doing it correctly now.   We will do this again on Wednesday.  We did Lesson 109 and 110 was an assessment.  Part of the class did Lesson 108 on the weekend.  I will move on to Lesson 111 and 112 for Wednesday. HOMEWORK:  Please complete any portions of Lessons 108 and 109 that have not been done.  Please drill the 5's multiplication facts and any subtraction facts that you can.  J.C. is our leader with 98 of his 100 addition facts memorized.  Julia is right behind him with 83 addition facts learned.   Now we are moving on to mastery of the subtraction facts!

Monday April 15

Today's lessons were to be 106, 107 and 108.  Lesson 106 was counting by 5's and then moved into multiplying by 5.  That went very well.  Everyone understood and could easily come up with the answer.  Lesson 107 and 108 were on double digit subtraction and then borrowing.  The double digit subtraction went fairly well, but Lesson 108 on borrowing was too tough and they did not understand even using the money mats and exchanging a dime for 10 pennies before subtracting.  SO Monday we will start with Lesson 108 and try again.  HOMEWORK:  Please do Lesson 106 and 107 both sides with your child.  LOOK FOR SUBTRACTION SPEED DRILLS in their text and have them finish the problems they did not do during the drill.  Many students are struggling with basic subtraction facts so let's keep working on those.

Wednesday April 10

Today's Lessons were 104 and 105 plus an assessment.  Lesson 104 taught the students to add three numbers together.  This does involve carrying so most of them understood what was happening.  Lesson 105 did a lesson on centimeters.  It will take a little time for them to adjust to this, so we will keep working on this.  We did 2 different speed drills and practiced 3 rounds of subtraction drills with flash cards.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Lesson 104 Side B and both Side A and B on Lesson 105.  See how much your child can do with your help.  They will need to be able to work independently in the 3rd grade, so let's prepare them!

Monday April 8 th

Today we did Lesson 101 and worked on the last 16 facts in adding and subtracting that have not been taught.  In Lesson 102 we concentrated on comparision symbols of less than, greater than and equal. In the last Lesson 103, we learned about solid geometric shapes.  I tried to link the shapes to familiar things, but did not have the actual figures to display.  We did 2 speed drills, Side A for Lessons 101 and 102.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Side B for Lessons 101, 102, and Side A and B for Lesson 103.  You will need to check to make sure your child completed Side A on 102.  Some were doing well and others were a little slower today.

Wednesday April 3

Math is moving very rapidly in each class session.  Today we did a speed drill with 100 addition facts, Lesson 99 which taught multipying by 1 and 100, Lesson 100 which involved using 1 inch tiles to cover spaces and figures. Then we did another speed drill for subtraction facts and an assessment.  I did not get through all the oral assessments, but will do a couple more on Wed.  HOMEWORK:  Please finish Lesson 99 Side B.  Lesson 100 was an assessment with no extra pages.  Please spend a little time on drilling subtraction facts.  Many of the children are really struggling on these and I would love for them to be strong before entering 3rd grade math.

Monday April 1

This was a super busy class today.  We were able to do 2 Speed Drills and cover Lessons 96, 97 and 98 concepts.  Students worked on dividing numbers in half and learned evens can be divided equally and unevens have a remainder.  We used pretend candy, eggs, bunnies, etc.  We did the Master 96 worksheet together.  Then we worked at counting quarters.  This will take more practice.  Thanks to all who are doing the extra practice in math. Hopefully, we will see the fruit of this soon.  HOMEWORK:  Please make sure Sides A and B are completed for Lessons 96, 97 and 98.  Some were able to do more than others in class.

WEdnesday 3/27

It was a super busy in class today.  Wednesdays will have three lessons if we can possibly do this.  Lesson 91 taught expanding numbers so we expanded them and contracted them back down without the zeroes!  We practiced time to the 5 minute intervals.  Lesson 92 was a bit harder with the presentation of the doubles as a base for the subtraction facts.  Only one student really understood it so I will keep repeating the concept.  Lesson 93 was writing money with a cent sign and a dollar sign.  We were able to do 1 Speed drill and Side A for Lesson 91.  Some got part of Lesson 92 finished in class.  HOMEWORK:  Please check work and complete Lessons 91,92 and 93 Sides A and B that have not been finished.  You have two packets for Thurs. and Fri.  Please time the drill for 1 min and 15 seconds.  Need quick recall of the facts.

Wednesday 3/20

We are ready for the last quarter of the year.  I will be moving through the material rather quickly now.  Note that there will be practice problems for the next few weeks.  Please time your child 1 min. and 15 secs to try to help them improve their class speed on these facts.  You will have the same ones several times in a row to improve.  Today we did Lesson 89 and the Assessment for Lesson 90.  We worked with multiplication, tangrams, time, counting groups of 10 and did 3 speed drills.  We worked Side A for Lesson 89.  HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B of Lesson 89 and the speed drill and one extra worksheet on the packet today.  Wed. we will do the concepts for 3 Lessons so there will be more homework on Thursday and Friday from now on.  I need to prepare your child for next year's math!

Monday 3/18

It was a super busy morning for us.  We went back to Lesson 86 and worked on grouping tens and counting pennies using tally marks.  I think they understand now much better.  We did a speed drill S. 7.4 and I observe that several students do not do well on this.  We worked on the addition ten family and then tried the subtraction problems for it S 6.0 and it was very poor.  We practiced telling time to the 5 minute intervals by setting clocks.  That is slowly improving.  HOMEWORK: Please do Side A  and B for Lesson 88.  Side B needs to be done for Lesson 87 and any problems they did not complete in class.      After break I will begin sending math packets of the basic facts home with students to be done and timed so they can practice a little every day.  In order to move to Level 3/4 I have to know that the basics have been learned by the student.  Practice basics over the Spring Break!

Wednesday 3/6

Today we worked on a Written Assessment #16.  Some students still need to work on reading the thermometer.  All need work on combining dimes, nickels and pennies. That section did not go well today.  I moved into the new concepts of adding three "sale" items together for a sum.  Most understand the concept even if they could not get the right answer.  We will practice more on this.  We tried the estimation for Lesson 86 and only 1 child really understood what we were attempting to do.  We will keep trying on this.  Homework:  I need to have Side A of Lesson 85 completed, do Side A for Lesson 86 and Side B of both Lessons done for Wednesday.  Try to see how much your child can do alone.  I would like to pass them to the next level with confidence that they know the material on this level and do not need us to help them through each page.

Monday 3/4

Due to poor weather conditions this morning we had a late start.  I sent an email to you about continuing the math lessons today and tomorrow.  This is a most unusual winter and we are all quite tired of it.  HOMEWORK:  Please continue the math lessons by doing Lessons 83 and 84 with your child today and tomorrow.  Do both Sides A and B.  Let your child do as much as they can alone after you present the lesson.  We need to work toward them being independent enough to move to the next level of math by the end of the year!  Have a safe day!

Wednesday 2/27

Today we completed Lesson 81 and 82.  We wrote numbers for the three-digit model and learned about fact families.  I also introduced the beginning of telling time to the 5 minutes.  There will be more on that on Wednesday.  In order to get close to the end of this book by the end of school we will speed up.  On Wed. I will do my best to cover three lessons of concepts.  You will have more homework for Thursday and Friday than usual from now on.  HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B for Lessons 81 and 82.  Finish the 100 facts speed drill if it is not completed.

Monday 2/25

Today's concepts included visualizing the larger 3 digit numbers.  We had pink and red hearts to arrange from the least to the greatest on the board.  Then we worked with the foam blocks to create larger numbers.  From there we moved to drawing them on the board.  Everyone caught on very quickly to this concept.  We moved to creating overlapping geometric designs on the geo boards.  That didn't go as smoothly.  We had an oral assessment and a written assessment. HOMEWORK:  Please do Side A and B of Lesson 79.  We spent so long on the lessons and tests that we could not get it done today!  Have a great break next Monday!

Wednesday 2/13

Today we learned to write mixed numbers.  First, we used our pattern blocks and took the hexagon blocks and two trapezoids to cover one and made a variety of mixed numbers. Then, we used the extra worksheet from the text and did it.  We did another of the 100 fact drills today.  The Lesson 78 was on ordering three digit numbers.  HOMEWORK:  There is more than usual today as this was a longer and more difficult lesson for the class.  Please do Side B of Lesson 77 and Side A and B of Lesson 78.  Also, have you child finish any of the facts on the 100 fact sheet that they did not do in class for the practice.

Monday 2/11

We did more work counting by 3'sin Lesson 75 and did more practice with the adding of two digit numbers.  Now they took away the dimes and pennies boxes and the students had to create their own set up for the problems.  We took Assessment 14.  Lesson 76 focused on the double digit addition and subtracting two from a number. We did some oral practice telling time for one hour before and one hour after a given time.   HOMEWORK:  Please complete Lesson 75 and 76 Side B for Monday.  Any oral practice you can give your child on subtracting 2 and subtracting 9 would be helpful to them.  Stay safe!

Wednesday 2/6

We worked Lesson 73 and 74 today.  We added the concepts of counting by 3's, subtracting nine, and measuring line segments to the half inch.  Special thanks to the two parents who did the homework of completing Master 2-72 which was the adding of double digits with carrying.  Homework:  Please complete Lesson 73 and 74 Side B at home for Wednesday.                                                                                             **Please remember that class begins at 8 and by 8:15 I am into the day's new concepts.  I could not go back and repeat the lesson today for the latecomers.  Sorry they missed it, but we had to move on with class.

Monday 2/4

We really had to work hard today.  Each lesson is filled with new material and I try to review the previous lesson concepts so class is very busy.  Today's concept was adding double numbers, 100 math fact practice and the idea of regrouping pennies when there is more than 10.  HOMEWORK:  There is more than usual today.  Please complete Side B of Lesson 71.  You will need to do both Side A and Side B of Lesson 72 with your child before class on Monday.  There is a Master Sheet 2-72 that we did not use.  I did mats in front of them and problems at the board for this concept.  Please do that page to help your child understand the regrouping better.  Thank you and try to keep warm!

Wednesday 1/30

Today we worked on Lesson 69 which taught thermometers.  This was very hard for the students so you may want to try doing some more for practice.  Lesson 70 was an oral and written assessment today.  You will see that we did not get to complete our -2 fact sheet so please finish it at home.  Homework:  Please finish Side B of Lesson 69, finish the -2 speed drill and PRACTICE the -2 facts.  All the students except one are struggling with the concept.  I am going to be requiring a little more on the fact memorization in this semester, so please keep up the practicing.

Monday 1/28

Thank you for being patient with me this week.  I was without electricity for 4 days and without a home, computer and all those wonderful things!  Today we did Lesson 67 and 68 in class. Every lesson is full of new concepts so we will be learning many new things in the next few weeks.   This week we are learning to do double numbers by using coins and subtracting 2 from an even numbers and odd numbers. HOMEWORK:  Please do Lesson 67 and 68 Side B.  Note the last speed drills and help your child with the facts they still do not know.

Wednesday 1/16

Today we did Lessons 63 and 64.  It was full of new concepts.  We worked with time to identify a.m. and p.m. as well as the terms noon and midnight.  Lesson 63 covered the idea of a dozen of something, eggs, cookies, donuts, etc. and a half dozen.  Feel free to reinforce these at home.  Lesson 64 covered adding three or more single numbers by looking for groups of 10.  More practice is needed on this.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Side B for Lessons 63 and 64.  By now your child should be able to do this alone.  If you are helping too much it will be difficult for your child on the test.  Encourage independence!

Wednesday 1/9

We did some speed drills that we had not completed as we went through the book and played a couple of math games on the board. I retaught a concept that several were struggling to understand and then we did Christmas activity sheets together for the rest of the time.  There is NO homework in the book.  Please do get the second book for this course if you do not already have it at home.  We will need it in early January.   If possible let your child help you measure as you make cookies or fix something over break.  I cannot do everything that text suggests because of the limitations of a classroom.  Have a wonderful Merry Christmas!

Wednesday 12/12

It was a super busy day for us in class.  We worked on Lesson 59 which is learning about measurements for a recipe.  I brought in measuring cups and spoons to let the students see what the amounts would be, but without a kitchen we did not get to make the cookies!  Then I did the Assessment Test 11 and the oral exam.  It is too close to Christmas and math was not on their minds.  HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B for Lesson 59.  Over the break have your child practice oral counting with large numbers like 290-310 and above.  They could not set the clock to 7:30 and then give me an hour ago on the clock.  It will get better in January!

Monday 12/10

Today we covered Lessons 57 and 58.  We worked with our geometric-boards in making shapes and working on angles.  Then we worked on the last 8 addition facts that are called the oddball facts because they do not fit into any of the other groups we have learned.  HOMEWORK:  Please help your child do Side B for Lesson 57 and 58.  I will cover Lessons 59 and 60 in class on Monday and do speed drills and math games on Wednesday in class.  IF you have not purchased the second book for Level 2 in Saxon please do so as we will need it very soon.  ALSO, it is time to clean out your child's folder and school supplies and regroup for 2nd semester!  Thanks!!!

Wednesday 12/5

Our Lessons were 55 and 56 today.  We had an assessment and then did Lesson 55 which was about creating and reading a number line.  In Lesson 56 we worked on measuring with a child's foot and the teacher's footsteps to the door.  Then we are going to measure with an actual ruler next time.  We ran out of time today with all we were trying to do.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Lessons 55 and 56 Side B for Wednesday!  If your child did not complete side A on 56 please complete that too.  Most children did finish, but I noticed a couple still working on it.  HOPE YOU MAKE IT TO THE OPEN HOUSE!  6-7:30--Come and go!

Monday 12/3

Our Lessons were 53 and 54 today.  It was subtracting ten from a two-digit number and placing two-digit numbers in order.  We used dimes to wowrk on this concept and everyone seemed to catch on quickly.  We did a couple of speed drills and Side A of both Lessons.  We had to repeat the lesson on symmetry because the book gave us a couple of difficult things to separate equally.  I will have out Math packets next Monday night at the Open House so you can see what your child has been doing in class!  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Lessons 53 and 54 Side B for Monday!

Wednesday 11/28

It was a two Lesson day and we worked on Venn diagrams and lines of symmetry today. We did a couple of speed drills and then lessons and still had time to play an addition game with a pumpkin in the middle to add to each number.  Then on the first round they could tell me how many pies they made out of the pumpkin and on the second set it was a magical pumpkin and they could tell me what the pumpkin could do.  Interesting comments!  HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B for Lessons 51 and 52.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Monday 11/19

Today we began the subtraction of a number from itself, subtracting one and subtracting zero.  It was also a day that we used our pattern blocks and measured figures to see how many we needed to cover the figure.  We did a written assessment and an oral assessment.  Homework:  Students need to complete Side B of Lesson 49.  If I returned a lesson home with your child it is because it is not complete on both sides yet.

Wednesday 11/14

Today we learned to subtract half of a double.  We use tiles on the board and pictures to work on the concept.  We did more measuring with our rulers.  It was an assessment day so we did our test in class.  HOMEWORK:  You will need to complete Side B for Lessons 45 and 46.  **Note:  Please do not do an assessment at home.  Let's save those for class time when everyone else is doing it.

Wednesday 11/7

Today we were learning to trade pennies for dimes in Lesson 43.  We had a pile of pennies on our mats and then tried to find out how many dimes we could trade for each set of 10 pennies.  We did several combinations.  I do not have a scale so we did some weighing of objects by comparison to the weight of a first object.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete Side B of Lessons 43 and 44 at home before Wed.

Monday 11/5

What an exciting day we had in math.  Today we cut "pies" into pieces and shaded how much we had "eaten" and made fractional numbers.  Then we had a chart with laughing pumpkins that knew a secret way to add 9 to a number.  First we added ten, and then on the next trip around we added 10 but took one away and said that number.  Our trick worked and we got every answer correct.   HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B for Lessons 41 and 42 before MONDAY!

Wednesday 10/31

This was an oral assessment and written assessment day.  In addition we did Lesson 39 about fractional parts with an apple and had an apple for breakfast!   The only concept that a few are having trouble with is the counting out of money and getting the dimes and pennies correct.  HOMEWORK:   Please do Side B of Lesson 39 and work at home with the counting out of money.  Counting backward from 100 to 0 by 10's should be reviewed.

Heading 2

Today was a very good day in our math class.  We were able to get through the concepts for Lessons 37 and 38.  Today the students worked with identifying dimes and pennies and then transferred that to learning about tens and ones in a number. We worked at using a ruler and measuring with the one inch tile pieces.  Everyone was eager to learn today!  HOMEWORK:  Please do side B for Lessons 37 and 38.  Your child has a progress report in their backpack!

Heading 2

Today was a very big day in Math.  We learned how to add ten to a two digit number, worked again on the sums of ten, and worked at identifying pairs.  We had Assessment #6 and then Side A of Lesson 35 and 36.  Homework:  Please complete Side B for Lesson 35 and Lesson 36.

Heading 2

On today's lessons of Lesson 33 and 34 we worked at learning the numbers that are added together to make ten and then divided shapes into halves, fourths, thirds and sixths.  It was a lively class and everyone worked very hard on the new concepts.  They are definitely learning!  HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B for Lesson 33 and 34.

Heading 2

Today we did Lesson 31 and 32 in our Math class.  We studied counting by 5's, learning to make tally marks, and lines.  The students caught on to the lines such as horizontal, vertical and oblique, but some could not get the tally mark concept.  HOMEWORK:  Please continue to work on counting by 5's and have your child work at making tally marks in the next 24 hours.  We shook 10 pennies in our hands and then tallied how many were heads and how many tails we saw.
