CLASS SUMMARY & HOMEWORK

Wednesday May 15

We have finished this course and will be doing verbal work on Wednesday and Monday using and explaining new maxims and explaining the hidden meanings of these gems.                                                                          STUDENTS HAVE BEEN GIVEN THEIR REPORTS IN CLASS TODAY!

Monday May 13

We have finished this course and will be doing verbal work on Wednesday and Monday using and explaining new maxims and explaining the hidden meanings of these gems.  Thank you for letting me work with your child this year.  It has been a great group to work with in class.  They are all capable writers!

Wednesday May 8

We are working on the maxim:"The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe."  Today we completed this maxim and worked on the sentences given changing them into metaphors.  HOMEWORK:  Please type the completed Maxim paper for Monday.   This is your last assignment!

Monday May 6

We are working on the maxim:"The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe."  Today we finished our Analogy section and worked on an Example for this maxim.  We will finish all of it in class on Wednesday and then the boys will be ready to type up their last one!  HOMEWORK:  NONE.  We will finish on Wednesday.

Wednesday May 1

We are working on a new maxim:"The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe."  I read from a book that I own about missionaries needing help from the Lord and how He quickly answered their prayers. We moved on to writing a Cause and a Converse for the maxim.  On Monday we will have to create an Analogy.  This one is best done in class together so there is no homework.    HOMEWORK:  Think of an example of a Cause where God answered prayer and the righteous were saved by those prayers.

Monday April 29

We started a new maxim today "The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run to it and are safe."  We had a discussion about the concept of a tower of safety and how the Lord can answer our prayers.  We did the Thesis statement, Praises, and the rough draft for it.  We were able to create a paraphrase of  the verse. HOMEWORK:  Think of an example of a Cause where God answered prayer and the righteous were saved by those prayers.

Wednesday April 24

We worked on our maxim of "He who covers an offense.." and complete the Testimony section with another verse of scripture to match it and then wrote an Epilogue.  We spent quite a bit of time creating sentences using metaphors about the tongue and the destruction it can do.  HOMEWORK:  Students need to type their final copy of this maxim for class on Monday.

Monday April 22

We worked on our maxim of "He who covers an offense.."  and worked on an Analogy from real life that would promote harmony rather than strife.  Finding an Example was very difficult because people who have covered an offense don't tall about it for it to be recorded.  We are down to the last two sections of this maxim.  NO HOMEWORK we will finish in class on Wednesday!

Wednesday April 17

We worked on our maxim of "He who covers an offense.."  and discussed ideas for a Cause paragraph and a Converse paragraph.  We talked about real life situations where it would be best to keep quiet and not create a division between people.  We have discussed the Analogy a little bit, but will work on that on Monday in class.  HOMEWORK:  Enjoy the Easter weekend and don't think about school!

Monday April 15

Students turned in their maxim, "Pride goeth before destruction..." today.  We read the next one and discussed it.  It is "He who covers an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends."  We decided that sometimes silence is golden!  We did the Encomium and the paraphrase pages.  HOMEWORK:  NONE.  Come back ready to work on Wednesday!

Wednesday  April 10

The students have completed another Maxim and are ready to type their final paper on this one.  We had several good testimony selections for this one and then we moved on to the Epilogue.  HOMEWORK:  Type the final paper for "Pride goeth before destruction..."  Make sure you put in all the Figures of Description and label Recognition, Reversal and Suffering.  If your paper looks short, add a few more adjectives, adverbs or a prepositional phrase.  Don't get lazy this close to the end of school!

Monday April 8

Today we went back and read our new paraphrase for the maxim "Pride goeth before destruction...and then created both a Cause and a Converse for the truth of it.  These can be made up stories where our character does the right thing and one where he does the wrong thing. In creating an analogy we have to take a real life event where the outcome can be exactly the same as the maxim.  HOMEWORK:  Students need to finish their Analogy paragraph and then find a real life example of someone headed for success who falls from grace and self destructs.  They do not have to write the paragraph just be ready to discuss this person.

Wednesday April 3

Today we started discussing our next maxim of "Pride goeth before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall." This one is full of meaning so there was lots to discuss!  We worked through the encomium, praises and a rough draft.  Then we turned our attention to the paraphrase.   Students had to look up their own words and change the saying into two new paraphrases.  Then we worked on a sheet of the new kinds of sentences that we have learned this year.  HOMEWORK:  Type the maxim from Monday for class on Monday.  Students need to think of a person who followed the new maxim and was blessed for not having too much pride.

Monday April 1

Today we finished all the parts of our Chreia and did the new type of sentence rewrites called synecdoche.  That was a mouthful, but we got the structure done several times!  We will begin a new maxim on Wednesday.  HOMEWORK:  Students have until next Monday to get their typing done for this one.  Any who can get it in by Wednesday it is appreciated by me so I have more time to grade.  One student did not think he could manage by Wed.  thus grace is being extended this once.

Wednesday 3/27

We did a lot of discussing today about the idea of a pain free life.  We talked about some people that have overcome tremendous loss and went on to be very successful in life.  Part of this class is incorporating the truths of the chreias and maxims into our own lives.  These students do a very good job of relating to the truths that are presented.  HOMEWORK:  Students need to create an analogy and an write about a good example for this truth.  These are page 130 and 131.

Monday 3/25

Today we started our new Maxim of " A painless life can be found by none."  We discussed it, wrote a thesis statement, 3 praises and a rough draft to praise the saying.  We moved to a paraphrase of this idea and created a story that would exemplify this truth in a Cause paragraph.  We have concluded that everyone experiences pain in their life and it is how we handle it that makes the difference!  HOMEWORK:  Write the nine narrative components for a Converse.  Add a figure of Description and complete a rough draft for the Converse.

Wednesday 3/20

Happy first day of Spring!  Today we completed our maxim in class and worked on 4 sentence variations.  This variation was perephrasis so we had to think of multiple words to say one.  That is sometimes harder to do.  It was taxing our brains to think of additional adjectives and prepositional phrases to say a simple word.  HOMEWORK:  The final copy of the maxim is ready to be typed.  Students need to remember to include their FOD for the sections.  Last time that was what cost them the most points.

Monday 3/18

Those vacation days go by so much faster than regular weeks!  We are down to the last quarter of our year and have a few things that we still need to do in this class.  Today we reread our maxim of "A wise son heeds his father's instruction.."  We worked on writing a Cause and a Converse for it.  We worked on an Analogy for it in class.  HOMEWORK:  Students need to create an Example.  This can be from the Bible of someone who listened to their father or a lesson from life.

Wednesday 3/6

Everyone turned in their homework this morning so we went back to the new  maxim of  "A wise son heeds his father's instruction..."  We read it and discussed it.  We created a thesis statement for it and the worked on the praises.  We created the rough draft and then worked together to create a new paraphrase for what is being said.  When we return after break we will be ready to do a cause and a converse for the maxim. HOMEWORK:  Rest, relax, and return to class ready to work very hard for the last few sessions!

Monday 3/4

The boys turned in their type written copy of the Chreia to be graded and we worked through the last 2 sections of the new Maxim.  We even did all four sentence variations at the end of this Maxim.  HOMEWORK:  For the first time the boys will type their maxim rewrite directly from their own textbook.  They are responsible for the spelling and punctuation as I will not be editing this one and making changes.  They are aware that they need to go slow and even ask for help if it is not going together well.  We shall see if they are ready for this big step!

Wednesday 2/27

What an exciting day!  Despite the crazy start to the day the boys were ready to settle down and think, so we were able to complete most of our new maxim writing,  "Each man is like those in whose company he delights".  We worked through the Converse, Analogy and wrote an Example.  On Monday we will begin the last two parts with a Testimony and our Epilogue. This type of writing makes us all think very hard!  HOMEWORK:  They have the last Chreia to type this weekend and are to continue working on the first stanza of This Present Crisis".

Monday 2/25

For right now we are laying aside the Chreia writing and beginning the Maxim writing.  Style remains the same, but we do not have an author to write about and we have to do more thinking on how it impacts us individually.  Today we began the work on "each man is like those in whose company he delights.  We had a discussion about the influence of the friends we choose.  HOMEWORK:  Each student needs to finish the rough draft for the Cause on p. 94 and begin to memorize the first 5 lines of the new poem, "This Present Crisis"

Wednesday 2/13

We were able to finish our Chreia about, "No race can prosper..." by Booker T. Washington.  Thanks, boys for bringing in the facts about George Washington Carver.  We created our Example page, a testimony and they can finish their Epilogue as homework.  We will be starting the section on Maxims next Wednesday.  HOMEWORK:  Type the final copy of "We shall sooner have the fowl..."  if you need to do it.  Write your rough draft of "No race can prosper.."  on the white paper.  It will be due on next Wednesday which gives you a week to complete this assignment.  Have a great break on Monday!

Monday 2/11

The students turned in their final draft for the Chreia, "We shall sooner have the fowl by hatching the egg than by smashing it."  Logan did his so well he does not have to type his paper.  The other students will need to have it typed and turn in next Wednesday for their final grade on it.  We worked on the Cause and Converse sections of the Chreia, "No race can prosper til it learns there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem."  HOMEWORK:  Students are to find 5 facts about George Washington Carver to use as our example for this Chreia.

Monday 2/4

In Chreia we began by doing some sentences for topographia and topothesia for practice in Figures of Description.  Then we began reading and discussing a new Chreia.  This one is by Booker T. Washington.  "No race can prosper till it learns there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem."  Homework:  Finish copying the last Chreia onto the white form for editing.  Try to find a few facts about Booker T. Washington to share with the class.

Wednesday 1/30

Today we moved on in the Chreia "We shall sooner have the fowl..."  We read our Converse sections and then made an analogy for the writing.  We began the Example section, but not everyone was able to finish it in class.  HOMEWORK:  Please complete all OLD assignments before beginning on today's.  Students need to complete the Example p. 81, Testimony p. 82 and write a 1-2 sentence Epilogue.  Parents, you may check grades in Teacher Ease.  Homework is being graded this semester and some grades are very low.  We are moving fast and there is some hard work ahead of us!  Stay warm!

Monday 1/28

I was able to check through the Chreia work that was turned in to me and return them to the students.  We started a new Chreia by Abraham Lincoln and discussed its meaning and did three of the first steps for it.  Homework:  Type up the Chreia "Do your Duty " for class on Wednesday.  Then complete the Cause section on p 78 of the new Chreia.  Some students need to write the rough draft of the Encomium if it will make the final writing easier.  I did not correct the Spelling for the Chreia writing.  I encourage students to use a dictionary or at least auto correct for their final draft.

Wednesday 1/16

Today we finished our current Chreia writing and are ready to copy and get this one edited before typing the final paper.  Today we worked on a Testimony for the Chreia "Do your duty..."  HOMEWORK:  Finish copying the Chreia onto the form for next WEdnesday.  I will edit these and return for completion.  On Wednesday we will work on the sentence variations.

Monday 1/7

After chatting about what we did over the Christmas break we settled in to work on a new Chreia by General Robert E. Lee.  The Chreia is "Do your duty in all things, you cannot do more; you should never wish to do less."  We discussed it, and then began to work through our steps.  Today we were able to do the discovery, praises and a thesis statement.  HOMEWORK:  Do the rough draft on page 69 and tie all these together in a smooth paragraph.

Wednesday 12/12

Everyone had their Chreia finished so we did some Christmas activities and I read to the students about some Christmas miracles.  We did a few activity pages and the time passed by very swiftly.  NO HOMEWORK:  I suggested that they read and relax so we can work very hard when they return in January.  Have a wonderful Merry Christmas with your family!

Monday 12/10

Logan and I were the class today so I had him read his Testimony and Example and then went through the Epilogue with him.  Then we just talked about all the world's problems.  We couldn't get them all solved in one short class!   HOMEWORK:  Go ahead with the typing of this Chreia so that you have no homework over the break time.  It might be a good idea to ask a parent to check through your spelling for obvious errors or grammar mistakes.  We really need to count this Chreia in this semester.  See you on Wednesday!

Wednesday 12/5

Today we shared our Cause and Converse writings for the Chreia and then moved on to the Analogy .  We talked about different ideas for our analogy and then each of them came up with an idea.  I wrote out a couple of quotes from other people similar to Daniel Webster's thoughts on restraint.  HOMEWORK:  Finish the Chreia with a testimony and do the Epilogue.  They may find another quote if they do not care for either of the two that I gave as a reference.  The students need to clean out their folders and put in a new supply of paper getting ready for more writing next semester!

Monday 12/3

Today we re-read the new Chreia and began the steps by working on the Encomium parts of Discovery, Praises and a Thesis statement.  These were combined into a rough draft.  We worked on new paraphrases of the statement by varying the words in it with new synonyms. We discussed possible new settings for a converse section and a Cause section and got some new ideas.  HOMEWORK:  The students are to complete a new Cause and Converse section and bring it to class on Wednesday.  HOPE YOU CAN MAKE IT TO THE OPEN HOUSE TONIGHT!  6-7:30 p.m.   COME AND GO!

Wednesday 11/28

Today the boys finished up as much of the Chreia rewrite as they could and I graded it for them.  Then we did a little extra work by writing with Figures of Description and described a Christmas object using words and trying not to name the object.  I will have out some of the Chreia work they have been doing at the Open House next Monday evening, Dec. 3rd from 6-7:30 p.m.  Please stop by the room and look at the tough work these boys are doing.  HOMEWORK:  The Chreia needs to be typed up ready to turn in on Monday.  This time the fellows had the misspelled words underlined and they will have to figure out how to spell them!

Monday 11/19

Today the students shared their Testimony section and the Epilogue they had written.  Then they started copying their Chreia for final editing.  About 3/4 of the way through the class period we stopped and did oral work by telling about the first Thanksgiving from a picture and using a Figure of Description that I would give to them. We used a lot of differnet FODs during the practice time.   HOMEWORK:  NONE.  We will start again on Monday.

Wednesday 11/14

Our class time today was spent discussing and writing an analogy from real life about our Chreia.  Once that was accomplished we had a long discussion over people who did the right thing regardless of the odds against them. These included people like Winston Churchill, David Livingstone, Daniel, Edith Cavell and countless others.  We decided that it is not always easy to stand against the crowd.  Students worked on their Example rough draft.  HOMEWORK:  On p. 66 the students are to come up with a quote that means the same thing as Davy Crockett's and write a Testimony and the end with an Epilogue.  We will read these in class Monday.

Monday 11/12

We wrote a Cause example for the Chreia we are working on in class and then wrote a Converse example where we took the opposite behaviors of the Chreia.  The three boys were able to come up with very good examples of both today.  NO HOMEWORK as we will continue the Analogy writing in class on Wednesday.

Wednesday 11/7

Today we actually started another Chreia saying by Davy Crockett.  "Be always sure you are right, then go ahead."  We learned some interesting facts about this patriot and statesman. He was a least likely candidate for Politics, but became a respected voice.  He died fighting for this country.  HOMEWORK:  It is time to type up the corrected Chreia and have it ready for Monday.  We will continue with Davy Crockett on Monday in class.

Monday 11/5

Today we did work on sentence variations for ethopoeia and geographia.  We worked hard looking for synonyms for words that we don't use in our everyday speech and trying to vary the sentence, but keep the same meaning.  We used the dictionary and a thesaurus and found many new words!  HOMEWORK:  Copy out all the parts from your notebook work on this Chreia onto the form.  Don't forget to use those transition sentences to make it flow from one thought to the next!

Wednesday 10/31

We finished up all the pieces for our Chreia and then we did a little adventure in Chreia formation by taking the saying of Mary Poppins "In every job that must be done there is an element of fun."  We defended it using the Chreia components and decided that we need to keep a good attitude about everything we are called upon to do.  That lesson probably won't last long!  HOMEWORK:  NONE.  Monday we will do our sentence variations together and begin writing the new Chreia.  Have a good weekend!

Monday  10/29

Today we continued working on our Analogy portion of the Chreia.  We also moved into the section about the Testimony of another famous person who said something very similar to remind us that good Christians are good citizens.  HOMEWORK:  Your child needs a real life example of someone who was/is both a Christian and a good citizen to serve as an example.  We talked briefly about Jesus and how he kept the laws of the country, Mother Teresa, and other famous people.  George Washington was a good example, who when asked to become a King for America, chose to say "no" we need a democracy.

Wednesday 10/24

These students are making good progress.  We have moved on to the Chreia..."Whatever makes men good Christians makes them good citizens.." by Daniel Webster.  This style of writing takes a great deal of thought and careful pondering to put all the pieces together in to a great Chreia that persuades the audience to your point of view.  Everyone is working hard at this every class period.  HOMEWORK:  It is time to type the final paper for the last Chreia so your child has their corrected paper.  Everyone was given a progress report in class today.  There will be many more opportunities to raise that grade by Christmas.

Monday 10/22

Today we got our Chreia work back from Mrs. Selby with suggestions on how to improve on our next one.  Today we began a new Chreia with a quote from Daniel Webster that says "Whatever makes men good Christians makes them good citizens."  We have discussed this and began writing our introduction, praises and a thesis statement.    HOMEWORK:  Finish writing synonyms to create a paraphrase of the Chreia.  Write 3 new versions of the same statement for Wednesday's class.

Wednesday 10/17

We finished up our Chreia today by working through the Testimony and Epilogue sections.  Then we did a refresher for the Figures of Description of dendographia and mimesis.  HOMEWORK:  The students need to rewrite the Chreia using their rough draft of the encomium, paraphrase, cause, converse, analogy, example, testimony and their epilogue.  They need to be able to defend the Chreia with their words!
