WELCOME TO PROGYM 1

I am Sharon Wright and will be your child’s teacher at Brighton for Progymnasmata I,II, and Chreia classes this year.  I have been a teacher for 43 years and retired in 2016 from full time work.  I taught for 27 years at Overland Christian in the elementary department and at Kansas Christian College in the Elementary Education department.  I taught for Whitefield Academy for 11 years at the 4th grade level and taught Progymnasmata during those years.

I am currently working part time tutoring students in a couple of different schools.  I am looking forward to helping your child this school year and working with you to give your child the best education possible.  I want your child to enjoy writing and learn some wonderful skills.

Every day we have class there are some things your child needs to bring to class.  These are the items I expect your child to have each class session:

  • Textbook

  • 3 ring binder

  • 2 or more pencils

  • Plenty of paper

  • A small paperback thesaurus is very helpful when trying to do sentence variations

  • Students at the Chreia level benefit from having a small dictionary to use

I will be teaching cursive writing in the first few lessons so that all work can be done in cursive on their fables, narratives and Chreia writing. We will have time to start working on a fable, narrative or Chreia lesson, but probably will not be able to finish it in class.  The final portions will become homework so it can be read and shared in the next class session. Students will have some incentives to complete the homework neatly and carefully each week.

I will begin with an assessment for each child and monitor their progress as we go along through the year.  If you have questions for me feel free to call 913-236-9654.

Today was a very big day in Math.  We learned how to add ten to a two digit number, worked again on the sums of ten, and worked at identifying pairs.  We had Assessment #6 and then Side A of Lesson 35 and 36.  Homework:  Please complete Side B for Lesson 35 and Lesson 36.

On today's lessons of Lesson 33 and 34 we worked at learning the numbers that are added together to make ten and then divided shapes into halves, fourths, thirds and sixths.  It was a lively class and everyone worked very hard on the new concepts.  They are definitely learning!  HOMEWORK:  Please do Side B for Lesson 33 and 34.

Today we did Lesson 31 and 32 in our Math class.  We studied counting by 5's, learning to make tally marks, and lines.  The students caught on to the lines such as horizontal, vertical and oblique, but some could not get the tally mark concept.  HOMEWORK:  Please continue to work on counting by 5's and have your child work at making tally marks in the next 24 hours.  We shook 10 pennies in our hands and then tallied how many were heads and how many tails we saw.
