Monday April 22

We started our Figures of Description writing in class on last Wednesday and the students completed it today.  I passed back the edited sentence variation pages and let them start the rewrite on the colored paper.  I edited the FODs and gave them back as well.  Some students completed the copying in class and others will do it as homework.  HOMEWORK:  Complete all copy work onto colored paper.  Someneed to finish both sentence variations and FOD paper for Wednesday!

Wednesday April 10

The students worked on The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing rewrite with the rest of the sentence variations for it.  They changed the last three sentences and are ready to do the next step!   HOMEWORK:  Create a sentence variation rewrite and insert the new sentences that you created in class that I said would fit well into your story.  Read your completed work aloud to someone so that you can read it aloud in class on Monday!

Wednesday April 3

Today we took our test on all the FODs.  Josiah made 100%--Congratulations on your hard work.  The rest of the class will have another opportunity to try this again before the year is over.  We read our FOD rewrite for The Sick Lion in class and helped each other make some changes if they were needed.  HOMEWORK:  Please copy the sentence variation writing onto the colored paper for Monday's class.

Monday April 1

We read our sentence variation rewrites to the class and now I have them to edit before the students copy them onto colored paper.  Then we worked on the Figures of Description for this fable which include hydrographia, chronographia and pragmatographia.  Students were given time in class to study the FODs for their test on Wednesday.  They were paired up and could drill with each other.  HOMEWORK:  Students need to study for the FOD test on Wednesday and write their FOD paper for The Sick Lion.

Wednesday 3/27

Today we began a new fable entitled The Sick Lion.  An old lion resorts to trickery to gain his food supply, but the smart fox figures it out and escapes harm!  We read the story and discussed the vocabulary, made an outline, did the components for the story and then worked on all the sentence variations.  It was a good class time today!  HOMEWORK:  Students need to make a sentence variation rewrite with their new sentences and follow the outline to retell the story details. Begin studying for the last FOD quiz next Wed.

Monday 3/25

Everyone got to read their Figures of Description fable for The Mountain in Labor to their classmates.  Then I gave them back their edited sentence variation papers and they were able to get it copied in class.  I edited the FODs as they were writing and then passed them back for copying at home.  On Wednesday we will start a new fable together.  HOMEWORK:  Copy the edited FOD paper onto the green paper before class on Wednesday.

Wednesday 3/20

Today we read aloud the sentence variations for The Mountain in Labor.  Then we spent our class time working on the Figures of Description of:  Topothesia, an imaginary place, Dialogismus, conversation, and Geographia/Topographia, description of the landscape or location.  These sentence variations were a little rough this time.  Students need to read their work aloud before trying to read it to the class.  HOMEWORK:  Rewrite the fable now inserting the Figures of Description that they created in class.  Please check the story for obvious grammar and spelling errors if at all possible.

Monday 3/18

We began a new, very short fable entitled The Mountain in Labor.  Today we did the plot components, an outline and the sentence variations.  This is the fourth quarter of the class and students are going to be graded on their rough draft and will then be able to copy the edited version to raise their grade.  They have to add a lot of details to this story because it is so short.  I told them to use their 5 senses.  Add some colore, smells, and make the story come alive for the readers!  The moral is "Don't make such an ado about nothing."  HOMEWORK:  Complete the sentence variation.  Should be two pages skipping lines.  Feel free to read it and help your child edit before I grade it.

Wednesday 3/6

The students took the quiz for the first 7 Figures of Description.  After the break I will assign 7 more to study and then give a quiz with both sets on it for them to identify.  We read aloud our FOD papers for the fable The Dog and His Shadow and then began the rewrite process onto colored paper.  Most of the students finished it or got very close to being done.  HOMEWORK:  Complete the rewrite first.  Then rest, relax, and return to class after the break prepared to work very hard!

Monday 3/4

We worked on the FODs for The Dog and the Shadow fable in class.  We started our rewrite of the sentence variations onto the blue paper.  Some of the students finished it in class, others have taken it with them to finish.  HOMEWORK:  Complete the sentence variation rewrite.  Then rewrite the fable onto white paper using the Figures of Descriptions from their texts that we created in class today.  Insert the FODs into the fable to make a good, readable fable.  Underline the beginning of each FOD and label it so you will get credit for it.  Parents, it you have time read through the fable checking for obvious errors in spelling and punctuation.  Thank you!

Wednesday 2/27

Despite our crazy start to the day the class was ready to go to work this morning so we got a lot completed.  I have all the sentence variations for The Dog and the Shadow.  We are starting to work intently on the FODs for this class so watch the homework for the next few weeks.  Homework:  Students were to write Topographia--description of a place and Topothesia-description of an imaginary place 5 times each.  Some completed it in class.  Drill your child on these five FODs for a quiz on Monday.  Pragmatographia--description of an action, Chronographia--recurring time,  Dendographia--description of trees, Prosopographia--description of a face,  Effectio--description of someone's body.

Monday 2/11

The students got to read aloud their sentence variation fable for The Thirsty Pigeon to their classmates and make any revisions that the students felt would improve their story.  Then we began the Figures of Description for this fable.  We are going to us topographia, mimesis and sermocinatio for this one.  They may add topothesia, the description of an imaginary place if they wish some extra credit points.  HOMEWORK:  Please finish writing the FOD rewrite for The Thirsty Pigeon.  Most students have a good start on this assignment.

Wednesday 2/6

Monday 2/4

We shared our FOD fables of The Dove and the Ant with our classmates and then started the new fable of The Thirsty Pigeon.  We did our three plot components, the outline and started the sentence variations for it.  On Wednesday we will finish the variations and begin rewriting it.  The Students have their sentence variations for The Dove and the Ant to copy on the gold paper before Wed.      Homework:  Recopy the sentence variations very carefully.  Make the changes that have been suggested!

Wednesday 1/30

Wednesday 1/16

Today we worked on the sentence variations for the fable of The Bear and the Two Travelers.  I gave them back their papers that had been edited.  A few were able to finish during class, but  some have a little to finish.  They read their FOD paper out loud to their classmates.  I graded them and gave them blue paper to copy their FOd  rewrite over this long break.  HOMEWORK:  Complete the sentence variation and the FOD rewrite.  They also have on FOD term sheet to write 4 times.

Wednesday 1/9

Today we worked on the fable of The Bear and the Two Travelers.  We finished the sentence variations and then began our rewrite of the fable.  They can change the agents (people) in the story and have a variety of places, but they need to follow the outline while retelling.  HOMEWORK:  Please finish writing the story.  Have a parent check it for obvious errors before turning it in to me for a grade.  Also, do the FOD exercise that you were assigned in class.  Write the first two FODs and definition 4 times each.  Due on Monday!

Wednesday 12/12

We spent the time today doing Christmas activities.  We tried to play a Jeopardy style game, but the students did not know lines of the Christmas carols or enough Christmas traditions to make it interesting so we changed the format and just got some information about Christmas.  We did some activity sheets and I read a couple stories to them.  NO HOMEWORK:  This would be a good opportunity for your child to read and relax before I big push when we return to class!  Have a wonderful Christmas with your family!

Monday 12/10

We spent the entire period writing our Sentence variation fable onto the colored paper.  Some of the students were able to complete this and began their Figures of Description  rewrite during the period.  It was a busy time but most wanted to finish this so that they would have no homework over the break so they were willing to push a little today.  HOMEWORK:  Complete the FOD rewrite if it was not done in class.     Please help your child clean out their composition folder and get more lined paper in preparation for the second half of this class!

Wednesday 12/5

We worked on the Figures of Description for The Flies and the Honey-Pot and started the rewrite inserting our new ideas into the story.  The students learned about pragmatographia, prosopopoeia, and sermocinatio.  We wrote and read these to each other to make sure we had done a good job.  HOMEWORK:  Please have your child complete the FOD paper at home.  Then read through it for clarity and mistakes.  This is to be turned in on Monday.  ALSO-- PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD CLEAN OUT THEIR FOLDERS and restock notebook paper.  Many of them need to borrow each time they have an assignment.  Thank you very much for your help with this!

Monday 12/3

We reviewed the new fable of The Flies and the Honey-Pot and started a sentence variation writing in class.  We wrote for 20 minutes and then would stop and share what we had written.  The class would help the writer decide if it was following the outline and giving us details or if it still needed some work.  Most of the children have only a few more minutes to complete this.  HOMEWORK:  Complete the rewrite and read it to an adult before class on Wednesday!   That adult can make suggestions or even check spelling and grammar!    HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE OPEN HOUSE TONIGHT!  6-7:30 p.m.  Come and go!

Wednesday 11/28

Monday 11/19

We worked on using some of our Figures of Description to tell the story of the first Thanksgiving.  It gave the students a chance to practice them orally.  Then we played a letter game where we had to use the letters of Happy Thanksgiving Day to make new words at least 3 letters long.  This group found it to be a real challenge.  We worked together and finally created 70.  They were excited for their lunch treats so it was not a good day for actual work.  HOMEWORK:  None.  Have a good break and we will start a new fable on Monday!

Wednesday 11/12

We worked on the first two Figures of Description for The fable The Fisherman Piping.  We learned how to add water to our story with hydrographia, and the new Figure of mimesis.  We made several attempts to use these Figures of Description so we could use them in our writing from now on.  Then we stopped and will do the last one on Monday in class and started copying our sentence variations for The Fisherman Piping.  HOMEWORK:  Students who did not complete their copying in the class should have it done to turn in on Monday.

We welcomed a new member to our class, Alexis!  Today we worked on a new fable and read it, discussed it, did the three plot components for it and made an outline in class.  We spent a lot of time paraphrasing the fable so the students had a chance to hear what could be done with the fable by adding their own thoughts, but still following an outline for context.  HOMEWORK:  Your child is to completed the Figures of Description fable they were writing for The Hare and the Tortoise.  I moved to the new one so Alexis could quickly learn this process and your child has at least half of their fable done from class on Monday which means they can finish it easily on their own.

We spent our class time working on three Figures of Description to use in this fable.  We added in ecphrasis, geopgraphia and dialogismus.  We wrote out one for each of these and then read them to the class to see if they fit the story and made sense to our readers.  We will continue our work on Wednesday.  HOMEWORK:  Please copy the edited version onto the colored paper for your final grade on the sentence variations.

Wednesday 10/31
